28 Photos of What Hawaii Looked Like Before It Was a State

On August 21st, 1959, Hawaii officially became the 50th state to join the United States, under president Dwight D. Eisenhower. It was a long time coming, since Hawaii had been a United States territory since 1898, but its path to statehood was anything but straightforward.

From its original inhabitants to the tragedy at Pearl Harbor, here are 28 photos of Hawaii before it became a state in 1959.
